Wagashi is a broad term used to describe traditional Japanese confections. "Wa" stands for Japan, and Kashi means sweets or snacks. Wagashi is a compound of Wa, Japanese, and Kashi, or confection.　The sound of Kashi changes to Gashi in this case. For example, "Washoku" means Wa (Japan) and Shoku (cuisine).

Wagashi often features beautiful and intricate designs reflecting Japanese culture, making it a work of art along with delicious treats. They have continued to hold significance at Japanese festivals, tea ceremonies, and life events and are a part of everyday life for Japanese people.
