Bali: Mount Agung Hiking Tour

Indonesia

B-45350
$ 45.00

Location

Set off around midnight for a pre-dawn guided trek up Mt Agung, Bali’s highest mountain. The active volcano, which towers 10,308 feet (3,142 meters) above sea level, holds great spiritual significance to the Balinese people. You’re driven by coach to Pasar Agung Temple, the starting point for your 4- to 5-hour ascent. On arrival near the summit, enjoy extraordinary views in all directions, most dramatically to the east where the sun rises above Mt Rinjani on Lombok. After breakfast and morning tea, make the approx. 3.5-hour trek down.

After a convenient pick-up from your Bali hotel, your adventurous climb up Mount Agung begins at the temple of Pura Pasar Agung around 2:30 am. Here, you will start your ascent with the goal of reaching the peak before sunrise. The temple is in the village of Selat, on the road from Rendang to Karangasem. The first four to five hours of the hike will take you through a forest on a dusty path. The rest of the hike takes you first over broken rocks and then over solidified lava until you reach a peak about just below the summit, where there are excellent views of the area and you can even peer into the volcano’s crater.   You’ll arrive at the top of the volcano around 6 am and have an hour and a half to watch the sunrise, enjoy breakfast and take pictures. After descending, you’ll arrive back to Pura Pasar Agung around 11 am and be driven back to your hotel.

The best time to climb Mount Agung is from April to October, when the weather is dry. Hiking during January and February is not advised as there can be flooding and landslides in the area.

Climate:  At lower elevations it remains tropical but becomes distinctly cold and often very windy on the high bare rock slopes.  Hikers should come prepared with hiking shoes, a jacket, pants and a hand glove for the journey, which can get cold as you reach higher elevations.
